Justin Timberlake & Rihanna Win Big at AMAs

Rihanna AMA Icon

While Taylor Swift walked a way as the big winner of the evening with four awards, Rhianna and Justin Timberlake, ultimately stole the spotlight. Rhianna was awarded the first ever American Music Icon award, and the award for “Favorite Female R&B/Soul Artist,” as icing on the cake.

Comedienne Sara Silverman presented the “Favorite R&B/Soul Album” award and unabashedly pointed out the irony that of the three contenders in the category, one nominee is a former “Mouseketeer,” and the other is Alan Thicke’s (the father from Growing Pains) son.   Justin Timberlake ultimately won the battle of the blue-eyed soul singers, picking up the Favorite Album and Artist awards.

A rather controversial win of the evening, was Macklemore & Ryan Lewis for “Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album.” The rap duo beat out Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar, and people were quick to express their outrage on twitter. A final surprise win of the evening, was that “Cruise” by Florida Georgia Line featuring  Nelly beat both,”Blurred Lines” and “Thrift Shop” (arguably to of the most overplayed songs of the year) in the category for  “Single of the Year.”
