“ALLEN IVERSON: THE ANSWER” DOCUMENTARY
Before ESPN gave A.I. the “30 For 30” treatment and before the former NBA star got involved with the recent Tribeca Film Festival-premiered project, this gem delivered the standard story, but with good pacing, great highlights and one of those good ‘ol stern-voiced narrators that make classic sports docs feel way more important and urgent than they really hard.
Don’t Miss: Testimony from Larry Brown, A.I. and local Philly sports media littered throughout the video.
IVERSON ELEVATES OVER CAMBY
We believe this is The Answer’s best in-game dunk of his career.
Don’t Miss: The slow-motion replay.
NOT A GAME, NOT THE GAME THAT I GO OUT THERE AND DIE FOR. WE TALKIN’ ABOUT PRACTICE, MAN.
To say Allen’s time in Philly was, at time, tumultuous, would be an understatement, obviously, but the inflection point was never at its zenith quite like this infamous moment, in posterity on YouTube, after the Sixers reached the finals, after A.I. won MVP, when expectations were high for an already overachieving team. Read the complete transcript here.
Don’t Miss: The laughs that being at the 1:36 mark.
Iverson and his ex-wife had ups-and-downs and this incident in 2002 stemmed from an alleged argument the two had where the superstar burst into an apartment he owned, but his cousin and a roommate lived in, looking for his wife, who he allegedly kicked out of their home naked. Here’s the local news report on the incident.
Don’t Miss: Iverson’s cousin’s roomie’s comments about the ordeal.
AGAINST ALL ODDS
The outcast became the most valuable, and despite his defiance, Iverson was all heart. Watch at he thanks his teammates, Philadelphia and more for his award.
Don’t Miss: Iverson’s mother holding the MVP trophy.
Mike went this way, then that way. Iverson went that way, then this way.
Don’t Miss: Jordan going one way, AI the other.
Iverson and Marbury were billed as point guards for the new age. A.I. eventually shifted to the 2 in the pros, but when these guys teamed up in the backcourt together in D.C. they overcame a 20-point deficit with 3 leading the way by scoring 15 of his 25 points in the final quarter.
Don’t Miss: A.I. and Kobe talking to each other at the 7:23 mark.
WHERE MY COACH?
2001 was a magical season for Iverson, winning the MVP, leading the Sixers to the Finals, and it began at the mid-way point in the season when the Answer won All-Star MVP and finally bought into coaching on the pro level, however brief.
Don’t Miss: The :38 mark, when Iverson finally buys in.
STEP, STEP, SIDE TO SIDE…
YOU may have grown up in the backyard practicing hitting the game-winning shot. US? We were reliving this shot on the daily.
Don’t Miss: Horace Grant point down at Lue, like, C’mon, man…
THE PROBLEM & THE ANSWER
With apologies to Shaq, Kobe and KD, Iverson was the best spitter in the league. Here, over a one of the Trackmasters productions, Iverson and Jadakiss tag-team in a way the Sixers star never could on the court. Sorry, Stack, Hughes, and Snow.
Don’t Miss: The doubled chorus at the end.
ALLEN I. & STEPHEN A.
Stephen A. Smith started out as a local columnist and his rise is tied like a knot to Iverson’s. When SAS got mass appeal, ESPN tapped him to host his own talk show. The first guest?
Don’t Miss: The 12-minute mark when A.I. sheds tears over Larry Brown’s testimony about his player’s influence on children.
This playoffs series was a classic.
Don’t Miss: At 6-minuntes in Iverson goes baseline and while it’s not quite Dr. J, it’s pretty enough.
IVERSON & MARBURY: REDUX
These guys didn’t revolutionize the game in between the court’s lines like we thought they would. But the electric guards injected heart and swagger in a way that the league hadn’t seen since MJ’s early flight days. (Peep their first meeting in the NBA.) Here, the Answer and Starbury face-off one final time in China where Iverson netted 27 points on the Chinese champ, Stephon.
Don’t Miss: An hour in, Iverson darts across the lane for a high banker off the glass, looking every bit as agile as he was during his prime.
UNLV and the Webber/Rose-led Michigan squads are largely held in high regard by hip-hop loving hoop fans, but this spectacular backcourt would have made the fail whale more prominent than Kim K. on paparazzi pages.
Don’t Miss: Iverson’s full-court bounce pass to Page for the flush.
JEWELZ ICY BARS
Sure, Shaq and Kobe spit, but they seemed like Fisher-Price fun compared to the idea of Iverson the MC. The Philly guard inked a deal with Universal Records but his anticipated album never saw the light. This freestyle featured a gay slur and David Stern put the kibosh on the project.
Don’t Miss: At just under 45 seconds you can hear the line that got Iverson’s album shelved indefinitely.
Iverson’s tats are as iconic as his drives to the basket and his crossover. The most famous may be his “Only The Strong Survive” tattoo, which can now been seen throughout the league on multiple players. Now that’s permanent.
Don’t Miss: A.I. talking about the meaning behind the ink.
CROSS YOUR HEART AND HOPE TO FL
Tim Hardaway had the UTEP two-step, and a number of NBA players employ the crossover to their advantage. But Iverson’s cross was poetic, full of rhythm and prone to embarrass defenders. Learn how to do it on your own.
Don’t Miss: Hitting the replay option after you’re done.
WAY TO SAY SHOW ME, KOBE…
Iverson and Kobe had a unique relationship. Kobe was the local Philly kid, but his polished game, let alone his polished veneer, didn’t lead him to be very likeable by his hometown. Instead, Iverson’s warts-and-all approach endeared him to the blue-collar city. And moments like this, where he cut up Kobe, only burned his legend brighter.
Don’t Miss: Bryant’s baby arms as he reached for a fleeting basketball.
COUNTRY GRAMMAR: NELLY DIRECTS A.I. FLICK
We know, this sounds made up, right? But Nelly partnered with the NOC to direct this short film with Iverson interacting with the rapper across a number of activites, from the recording booth to the court to the fishing pod. It’s a rare look at A.I. relaxed and conversing with a peer.
In the booth…
On the party bus…
During a photo shoot…
Don’t Miss: Iverson shouting “Fish sandwich” in video three after catching a prize at sea.
IVERSON GOES BACK TO SCHOOL
A.I. was often criticized for being the playground champ, but his rags-to-riches game helped propel the And1 touring league to new heights. In this clip, he balls alongside the Professor, who’s game was heavily influenced by the star guard.
Don’t Miss: Professor nearly ishing his pants when he tosses Iverson a no-look at the midway mark.
A.I. certainly had a Samson thing going on with his hair and he shocked many, including his teammates, when he decided to let his braids go. (He grew them back not long after.)
Don’t Miss: His man having to be convinced multiple times Iverson is gonna chop his tresses.
LEGEND IN TWO GAMES
Iverson was a noted high school football player and in this clip the one-time QB shows that he still an arm.
Don’t Miss: The flying duck.
DOC’S THE JOINT
This isn’t nearly as notable as his Tribeca-premiering doc or the 30 for 30, but there’s some sensitive themes addressed here, including hip-hop fetish, his tats being airbrushed off of covers and his cultural influence.
Don’t Miss: Iverson promoting his rap album just shy of the three-minute mark.
THE LIFE AND TIMES OF A.IVERSON
“No Crossover: The Trial of Allen Iverson” was a moving portrait that documented the environment and circumstances that birthed the NBA superstar as we knew him.
Don’t Miss: Local Virgina residents revisiting the brawl at the bowling alley that led to Iverson’s imprisonment.
HE COULD GO ALL HE WAY
He might throw ducks as a NBA player masquerading as a QB, but, back in the day, Iverson was a quick as lighting and put the moves on when the ball was in his hand as a returner and defensive back.
Don’t Miss: A.I. laying the blueprint for fellow VA native Mike Vick, poor throwing habits and all.
ALL OF THE (HIGH)LIGHTS
He was spectacular in the pros and in college, but it’s worth noting how impressive he was a high school baller.
Don’t Miss: Anything. This is vintage ’93 Iverson. ‘Nuff said.
FINISH YA BREAKFAST
Who knew this day would ever come?
Don’t Miss: The tears, the quivering lip and the heart on the sleeve.
TOUCH THE SKY
This day was a happy as the previous clip was emotional. With a ton of Sixer greats in attendance (and your trusty WL editor, too), A.I. puts up one more big bucket: his jersey in the air.
Don’t Miss: The gift the Sixers gave Bubba Chuck at the end of the clip.
ROCK ‘N ROLL
Ya man was on late night and rode shotgun with Chris Rock as the comedian asked Iverson about crossing up Jordan, being called a bad boy, his corn rows and more.
