Loaded Lux. Beloved. The guy people crowned as “Battle Rap’s Savior.” When he crushed Calicoe at Summer Madness in 2012, he became a god. But those who’ve followed battle rap for years know that Lux has one of the best records in the world. 2014 might not be his year quite yet – he caught a shutout from Murda Mook at Total Slaughter and seemed to be outmatched against Hollow Da Don earlier in the year – but Lux has a strong history regardless. He’ll bounce back.
In light of his recent loss, we decided to take a look back at the good times, when Lux was crushing rappers like Snoop did buildings. He came up from Smack DVD battles and made it all the way to Hammerstein Ballroom. Take a look at the Harlem King’s career with The Five Best Loaded Lux Battles (available on Youtube).
Note: obviously, not all of Loaded Lux’s battles are available to view on Youtube, so if you have a better selection that isn’t online, let us know in the comments what battles you think are Lux’s best.
5. Loaded Lux vs. Midwest Miles
Midwest Miles got a bus ticket from Detroit just to come to Harlem and get his a$$ whooped by Loaded Lux on camera – but at least he had the heart to do it. Lux basically eats dude’s lunch so bad, he chokes – TWICE. Lux has always been intricate, but back then he rarely dropped a punchline that didn’t land. He only gets better as the battle goes on, too. Miles claims he’s “too f*cked up” at the end – maybe it was all that ether Lux was serving him.
4. Loaded Lux vs. Precise
BET Freestyle Friday was a dope forum for fans to get their battle rap fix, and Loaded Lux appeared a couple times to serve amateur rappers. Lux’s style is better acapella, but here he shows his versatility over beats, making another dude freeze up before raining down bars for the win.
3. Loaded Lux vs. Relentless
It doesn’t sound like Lux is coming off the dome, but Relentless drops corny bars while Lux goes straight for his neck with every word. “You remind me of them kids from Blair Witch – you’ll never make it out the projects.”
2. Loaded Lux vs. Murda Mook
Classic. In 2003, the seeds for a legendary rivalry were sown when Mook and Lux faced off for Smack DVD. Lux edges him out, even though Mook has three strong rounds, but what’s important is how much this battle electrified the budding battle scene at the time. It became the archetype, the best battle recorded on camera. It’ll go down in history as a turning point in battle rap’s evolution, and we have both competitors to thank for that.
1. Loaded Lux vs. Calicoe
You know it had to be this one. Lux went all out – props, presentation, even choking and then resurrecting the battle for an incredible display of showmanship. Ever since, it’s been debated whether he choked on purpose or not, but what’s important is how he bounced back. It’s still a soul-stirring event to watch today, and years down the road, it could be seen as the greatest battle hip-hop has ever witnessed.
