Officials have confirmed that team USA sprinter Torrin Lawrence has died after being struck by a tractor trailer.
Lawrence was driving in Georgia at approximately 1:40AM when his car blew a tire and came to a stop. Lawrence got out the car to call 911, reports say, and was struck by the the vehicle.
Considered one of the country’s best sprinters, the 25-year-old star recently took hold a gold medal with the U.S. in the 4×400 relay at the IAAF World Relays.
USA Track & Field CEO Max Siegel issued a statement saying, “Torrin represented USATF with pride and passion, and had an incredible future ahead of him. We join those who will miss him deeply.”
Lawrence currently holds the NCAA record for fastest indoor 300m sprint.
