When Tyga’s “Rack City” dropped two years ago, it was colossal. Tyga had his first solo top ten single on Billboard and it was playing out of every car across the U.S. But the biggest benefactor of “Rack City” wasn’t the song’s main artist; it was the song’s producer, Dijon McFarlane, a.k.a. DJ Mustard.
2013 was a flagship year for Dijon as his stripped-down sound invaded airwaves and never left. Now it’s the end of summer 2014, and Mustard’s reign on top doesn’t seem to be slipping. He’s even got producers jacking his sound for smash hits – like Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy.” Hear him address the issue in part one of #CRWN below.
Now that we’re putting away the barbecue grills for the year, it’s as good a time as any to collect the best DJ Mustard beats of 2014. For those of you who bemoan Mustard’s somewhat repetitive style, notice his welcome shift to R&B, from Trey Songz to Tinashe. His style is growing, and we’re here to see what’s next.
