Flying Lotus has been teasing a collaboration with the West Coast rap king Kendrick Lamar for some time now, and last night we finally got a taste of what their first released collaboration, “Never Catch Me,” sounds like.
FlyLo brings a little bit of everything into the mix – Jersey Club, ratchet hand claps, spiritual keys – while K Dot sprints all over the beat so strangely, it takes a couple rewinds to catch everything he’s saying.
In the past, Flying Lotus said that he’s given Kendrick a bunch of beats that have yet to see official release. “I don’t know if he’s gonna use them or not, but he recorded a bunch of stuff, which is why there’s no Captain Murphy album out yet,” said FlyLo. “He took all my beats!”
This is said to be the first single from FlyLo’s upcoming LP, You’re Dead, dropping October 7th, and from the sounds of this track, the L.A. beatsmith looks to bust brains once more next month. Hear the track above and tell us what you think.
