As the entirety of The Internet was quick to remind us, the highly anticipated trailer for Marvel Studios’ next big blockbuster Avengers: Age of Ultron leaked online last night and Marvel officially uploaded it to YouTube shortly after, causing next week’s episode of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” to lose out on a ratings bonanza in the process. The trailer is chock full of grim footage that shows The Avengers and the rest of the world in a time of crisis as the megalomaniacal robot Ultron (James Spader) attempts to wipe humanity off the face of the Earth. We were treated to lots of flashes of things to come in the two minute trailer, and I have some questions about where AOU is heading, like:
Why is Thor choking out Tony Stark?
The story of AOU revolves around Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) reactivating a dormant artificial intelligence called Ultron to help The Avengers do their job, but Ultron goes crazy and tries to kill of humanity. Stark must have done something pretty bad to have the Viking God of Thunder’s hand around his neck.
Where’s Nick Fury been?
Since the game-changing events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Nick Fury’s (Samuel L. Jackson) gone rogue. Here he is with a skull cap and minus his trademark jacket. What’s he been up to for the last couple of months?
Who might Andy Serkis be playing?
It’s been rumored for at least a couple of months that legendary mocap actor Andy Serkis would have a role in AOU, and there he is at the 1:27 mark. Who might he be playing? My guess would be Doctor Strange, seeing as how Marvel’s making a huge spectacle out of turning down actor after actor for the role. What is Serkis has been our guy this whole time?
Just…look at it. Damn. But can it live up to its name?
What has Bruce Banner curled up in a ball on the Quinjet?
For those who saw The Avengers, we know that Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) has learned to control his transformation into The Hulk, but he looks pretty bent out of shape throughout the trailer. A common theme with The Hulk has always been isolation and lonliness, but maybe it’s something else. Maybe the physical strain on his body is too much? Maybe The Hulk scares him into a state of regression?
Why is Captain America’s shield broken? And who/what did it?
Captain America’s shield is the most iconic aspect of his character, and here it is at the end of the trailer cracked more than in half. Minus the symbolic implications at play (the hero is broken), what on Earth is strong enough to cut through it? The shield is made of Vibranium, a fictional element second only to Adamantium (the metal on Wolverine’s claws) in terms of durability.
Why is Ultron so damn terrifying?
Up until now, one thing that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has lacked is a truly scary main antagonist. Thanos is more ominous than scary, and Loki is more of a competent manchild at the end of the day, but Ultron looks to be a different breed than we’ve seen before, a villain so ruthless, physically imposing, and mentally adept that he could stand to give The Avengers a true run for their money. That and he has a flying army of copies of himself.
What the hell is the deal with the ballerinas?
Your guess is as good as mine here, but this shot stuck out. It might be a bit of a stretch, but Black Widow (Scarlett Johannson) is a Russian-born secret agent, and ballet is a huge part of Russian culture; maybe we’re finally going to be treated to Widow’s origin story?
Avengers: Age of Ultron is out in theaters on May 1, 2015. Check out the trailer itself below!
