Dear White People, the satirical film from first-time director Justin Simien, expanded nationwide this past weekend, and it’s been making quite a bit of noise the past couple of weeks. A film bold and uncompromising enough to be about being “a black face in a white place” would have to try hard not to be controversial in today’s landscape. While watching it, I was instantly reminded of characters and themes from previous projects like School Daze, The Boondocks, and A Different World, among others.
