Five Best Songs Of The Week – Tink, Warm Brew, Mickey Christmas & more

best songs

If only Jay Electronica had decided to drop an mp3 of the brand new song he performed in Miami the other night, he would have surely made this prestigious list. Clearly, he doesn’t care about his brand.

This week the world found out about Tink, Grande Marshall continues his hot streak, Warm Brew celebrate their Interscope signing with a fresh new track, Awful Records rears it’s ugly head, and Kevin Gates finally announces the release date of Luca Brasi 2. Plus, we had to show Ty Dolla $ign’s new single some love.

Peep the pure product on the Five Best Songs Of The Week.

Warm Brew – “Whispers” (Prod. by Swiff D)

Southern Cali rap group Warm Brew is Ray Wright, Serk Spliff, and Manu Li, and they’ve been making dope music for years. Weeks ago, they signed a deal with Interscope via Dom Kennedy’s OpM imprint, and “Whispers” is the second song they’ve released since announcing the deal.

They’re spirited like The Pharcyde with equally lighthearted subject matter, and they have a superb ear for beats that make their songs sound like they’re riding on gusts of wind. It’s no different on the triumphant “Whispers,” set to appear on their next full-length, Ghetto Beach Boyz. Look out for these kids. Their music is too fun to ignore.

Rich Po Slim – “Shoes” (Feat. Archibald Slim) [Prod. by Archibald Slim]

Awful Records is making a strong case for the illest posse in rap right now, as members like Father and Ethereal continue to drop songs, videos and projects from out of the blue. This week, Rich Po Slim stepped out on his own with his Hubris EP, and the last song is our favorite one. The beat is just in time for winter as hustlers put their heads down and do what they do best. The tales that Rich and Archibald weave couldn’t be told by anyone else. This is their story, raw and uncut. We’re here for it.

Tink – “Around The Clock” (Prod. by Timbaland)

19-year-old Tink made the earth shake this week when Timbo started singing her praises like a canary at Power 105 in New York. Fresh off that buzz, she wisely dropped her latest single, with an ass-shaking beat by Timbo and slick, silver-tongued wordplay from the Chicago MC. A lot of people in the industry have high hopes for Tink. Let’s hope she can reach those heights.

Grande Marshall – “The Formula” (Prod. by Ben Pramuk & Sam Greens)

If you know us, you know we’re huge Grande fans. The kid just has a natural way with words. They roll off his tongue better than most other MCs right now, and he keeps up the consistency on “The Formula.” With his go-to producers Ben Pramuk and Sam Green continuing to refine their sound until, Grande’s next Fool’s Gold project My Brother’s Keeper is looking like it might be his best yet. Look for it to drop early 2015.

Kevin Gates – “IDGT” (Feat. August Alsina) [Prod. by Nic Nac]

Kevin Gates is top five out right now and if you don’t agree, you aren’t listening closely enough. A string of leaks has led up to “IDGT,” the lead single from his next tape, Luca Brasi 2. It features August Alsina, which feels like an almost unnecessary feature, but he doesn’t intrude, so it’s no big deal. Gates kills this hook. We need that Luca Brasi 2 ASAP.

Bonus: Ty Dolla $ign – “Stand For” (Prod. by Diplo & DJ Dahi)

Technically, this dropped last Saturday, so no it isn’t from “this week,” but we played it every day anyway, so we’re counting it. “Stand For” is from Ty’s upcoming debut full-length for Atlantic, Free TC, and it’s an incredible first offering. A helping hand from Diplo doesn’t distance this away from Ty’s rap-centric fanbase, and it’s refreshing to hear an R&B artist talk about something (anything) else other than bitches and bottles. This is certified.
