In the wake of the recent shootings of innocent civilians by police, Obama has announced funding for police training and body cameras that will be required to be worn by police officers across the nation. The White House will be providing $283 million dollars that will provide training to police officers on how to use their paramilitary weapons like assault rifles and armored personnel carriers. The funding will also bring in 50,000 body cameras that will be required to be worn by all police officers.
The body cameras will be used to record all police activities during routine traffic stops and beyond. More police surveillance has been in high demand amongst protesters during the numerous protests following the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. The recent death of 12-year-old Tamir Rice at the hands of another police officer in Cleveland has only fueled the call for body cameras.
The parents of Michael Brown are standing behind the decision as well. Last week, the Brown’s revealed that they will be spearheading a campaign to “ensure that every police officer working the streets in this country wears a body camera.”
