Kobe Bryant surpassed Michael Jordan on the NBA scoring list on Sunday night. The coveted achievement moved Kobe past Jordan at #3 right below Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone. During the Lakers game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Bryant was fouled by Zach LaVine and was set up make his free throws.
After Bryant made both free throws, the game was stopped in order to acknowledge the achievement and to award Kobe with the game ball. Soon after the milestone was reached, Michael Jordan released an official statement to the Associated Press and congratulated the Lakers shooting guard.
“I congratulate Kobe on reaching this milestone. He’s obviously a great player, with a strong work ethic and has an equally strong passion for the game of basketball. I’ve enjoyed watching his game evolve over the years, and I look forward to seeing what he accomplishes next.”
The achievement has been anticipated by many, especially by Kobe’s primary sponsor Nike. They have been talking about releasing an exclusive shoe for the day that Kobe would reach this momentous milestone. Since history was made last night, Nike has released the official images of the commemorative NikeiD Kobe 9 Elite “Mamba Moment.” With its green and purple FlyKnit upper, users will have the opportunity to customize the tongue, laces, midsole, and Swoosh. The color palette consists of 21 choices including both metallic and glow-in-the-dark options.
