It was ball good just a week ago. After D’Qwell Jackson’s interception in the second quarter of the AFC Championship game, the Colts realized that the Patriots’ balls were deflated during the game. Since last Sunday, the #DeflateGate fiasco has manifested into a national outrage amongst sports fans everywhere, especially die-hard Colts fans. No one is letting this go, especially the media.
On Thursday, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belichick held separate press conferences that made the situation worse for the Patriots. We all have that inner 11-year-old kid that still chuckles at the word “balls.” Tom Brady’s explanation about the state of the balls he handled (no pun intended) during Sunday’s game were hilariously taken out of context. Ball–I mean all–Brady did was answer the reporter’s simple question about how he made his selection of the 24 balls that were used in the game.
“When I pick those footballs out, at that point, to me, they’re perfect,” he said. “I don’t want anyone touching the balls after that. I don’t want anyone rubbing them, putting any air in them, taking any air out. To me, those balls are perfect, and that’s what I expect when I show up on the field.”
But it just gets worse from there.
Trolls took no time in creating rounds of hilarious tweets with clever puns, supporting memes and vine loops that will never let us forget the peak of #DeflateGate. But Brady isn’t alone. Bill Belichick has his own set of memes that basically confirm that he is the NFL’s Senator Palpatine.
