Universal Studios and Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane had a surprise hit on their hands back in 2012 when Ted first came out. The combination of clever premise and laugh-out-loud hilarity, not to mention the goodwill McFarlane has taken on over the years, helped push it to become one of the top grossing R-rated comedies of all time.
Surprising absolutely no one, Universal wants to rake in some more money with the lewd and cuddly bear, and now we have our first trailer for his second outing. The basic plot involves Ted (McFarlane) and his girlfriend Tami-Lynn (Jessica Barth) wanting to have a child, but Ted has to prove to a court of law that he’s human since, you know, he’s a foul-mouthed ambulatory plush toy. It seems like the plot’s pulled a 180 since the last film, focusing on Ted as the main character rather than his human best friend John (Mark Wahlberg) like last time. It’s also partially set to the tune of “Fight The Power” by Public Enemy, which I’m sure is supposed to be funny.
We get glimpses at jokes involving sperm banks, Samuel L. Jackson, and “At This Moment” by Billy Vera and The Beaters (McFarlane’s double-dipping here, since he’s already sang this as Brian Griffin on the Family Guy episode “Brian the Bachelor”). Check out the trailer above to see for yourself if Ted’s still got it. I think he might.
Ted 2 stars Seth McFarlane, Mark Wahlberg, Amanda Seyfried, Jessica Barth, and Morgan Freeman, and will be in theaters on June 26.
