Kanye West made the end of the Grammys a “fight for creativity.” Beyoncé was nominated for “Album of the Year” along with Sam Smith, Pharrell, Beck, and Ed Sheeran, but she lost to Beck’s album Morning Phase. Yeezus proceeded to the stage to give the crowd a piece of his mind but stopped himself before he made it to the podium. Kanye didn’t stay silent, though. After the show, Mr. West explained to E! why he almost pulled the same stunt from 2009.
“I don’t even know what [Beck] said. I just know that, the Grammys, if they want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us. We aren’t going to play with them no more. ‘Flawless.’ Beyoncé’s video. And Beck needs to respect artistry, he should have given his award to Beyoncé. At this point, we tired of it. What happens is, when you keep on diminishing art, and not respecting the craft, and smacking people in the face after they deliver monumental feats of music, you’re disrespectful to inspiration. We, as musicians, have to inspire people who go to work every day, and they listen to that Beyoncé album, and they feel like it takes them to a different place. And then they do this promotional event, and they’ll run the music over somebody’s speech, the artist, because they want commercial advertising. We aren’t playing with them anymore.”
He has a point. The Grammys have become infamous for snubbing major artists in hip-hop like Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, and 50 Cent. West even wanted Beck to give his award to Beyoncé. Luckily, Yeezy was able to think logically about his family before making another public spectacle out of the disappointing loss. But everyone knows what would have happened on that stage once ‘Ye stepped up.
“And by the way, I got my wife, my daughter, and I got my clothing line, so I’m not going to do nothing that would put my daughter at risk, but I am here to fight for creativity. That’s why I didn’t say anything tonight, but you all knew what it meant when ‘Ye stepped on that stage.”
The response from Beck after Kanye almost pulled a Kanye was a lot more understanding than we expected. At an afterparty for music’s biggest night, Beck told Us Weekly that he held no grudge against Kanye for coming up on stage.
“I was just so excited he was coming up,” said Beck. “He deserves to be on stage as much as anybody. How many great records has he put out in the last five years right? You can’t please everybody, man. I still love him and think he’s genius. I aspire to do what he does.”
The 44-year-old singer also believes Beyoncé should have been the one to take home the Grammy just because, “She’s Beyonce!” While she didn’t get best album, she did take home several other Grammys including Best Surround Sound Album, Best R&B Performance, and Best R&B Song for her joint single with her hubby Jay Z “Drunk In Love.” As of now, Queen Bey holds 22 Grammys making her the 2nd highest female Grammy winner in the industry.
However, Kanye’s not angry at Beck. It’s the Grammys that he has the problem with. TMZ caught up with Yeezus early Monday once he arrived back in New York and cleared up his comments he made to E! He made sure that the people knew that he loves Beck.
“I wasn’t saying Beck; I said the Grammys. Beck knows that Beyoncé should have won; you know that.” When asked if he had even heard of Beck “before yesterday,” West added, “Come on, man. I love Beck! But he didn’t have the Album of the Year.”
