VERSE BEHAVIOR: Mad Skillz Explains Lyrics From Made In Virginia

Mad Skillz and Bink Made in Virginia

Mad Skillz, or Skillz as you may know him, has been bending verbs to his will for quite some time now. Almost twenty years and six albums after his 1996 debut From Where?? he’s still not sure folks know the answer to that question–or respect it. So he is back with a not so subtle reminder.

Made In Virginia, the follow-up to 2012’s Thoughts Become Things, finds Skillz linking exclusively with the legendary producer Bink! to pay tribute to their home state. The man you may know for his year-end Rap Ups, “Vinyl Destination” tour diaries with DJ Jazzy Jeff or “Hip-Hop Confessions” video series came back with a soulful vibe and his hometown on his back.

“It was something that me and him have never done,” Skillz tells “There’s nothing wrong with turning up or being ratchet, but we wanted to do something for our state (Virginia) to represent where we’re from. Not too many people do an album with one producer. It was us being fans of Gangstarr, Pete Rock and CL Smooth. Going back to, ‘You get the boards, I got the verse.’ We just wanted to restore that feeling.”

As usual, we had to delve into that ‘feeling’ in this segment of Verse Behavior. WatchLOUD got the opportunity to speak with Skillz about some of the best moments from the album and his career as well. The Virginian tells us about his come up, family life, and his feelings about the state of today’s hip-hop in this one. Let’s take a look at the best moments from Mad Skillz and Bink!’s’ Made In Virginia.
