Fox Reporter Describes Oscar Performance As “Jigaboo Music”

Quixotic singer Lady Gaga performed one of several musical numbers during the Academy Awards. The voice behind hits like “Poker Face” sang a tribute to The Sound Of Music covering “My Favorite Things,” “Edelweiss” and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” to commemorate its 50th Anniversary.

The following morning Fox co-host Kristi Capel of Fox 8 in Ohio used the phrase “Jigaboo music” to describe the performance.

“You can really hear her voice, with all the jigaboo music,” she said the clip below. “Jigaboo” is a known racial slur used to insult African-Americans. However, her African-American co-host chuckled and nodded.

Potentially trumping Sean Penn’s ill-advised green card joke from the Awards broadcast for offensiveness, Capel sent a copy and paste apology to everyone on Twitter storming her mentions. She insists she did not know the meaning of the word, “Jigaboo.”

So the lesson is that when some people–who work as professionals in media– make up words to describe music their brain defaults to known racial slurs. Roger that.
