Back in 2011, the industry was fully aware Kendrick Lamar was about to blow. He had just dropped Section.80, known to many as the “secret Interscope album,” when Pharrell decided to pay him a visit at the studio. “I love all that jazz shit that y’all have in your music,” says P. “Do not lose the producers.”
Four years later, and To Pimp A Butterfly is filled with jazz influences, whether it’s “For Free? (Interlude)” or Terrace Martin playing sax throughout the album. Looks like K. Dot took Pharrell’s words to heart.
