While in the Dominican Republic for a show, El-P and Killer Mike gave an interview talking about how they each became musicians at such young ages. El-P’s father used to play the piano and Killer Mike always knew he he was going to be a rapper, despite being told by a teacher that he was “too smart” to be rapping.
“My personal passion is I want to die being heralded as one of the greats in rap music,” says Mike. That’s powerful, and it holds even more weight after his name was mentioned on Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly.
But maybe the best part of this video comes at the end, when we hear El-P play a preview of a beat off the next Run The Jewels album. And although the snippet is short, it’s got enough drums to get us giddy.
Watch the video above. Even with all the press these two have been doing, it’s a must-see.
