It’s about time we heard from Dr. Dre about his upcoming film Straight Outta Compton. The founding member of N.W.A. stopped by Real 92.3 in L.A. to chop it up with Big Boy about his former rap trio’s biopic. Dre discussed the making of the film and his role behind the scenes as one of the film’s producers. Taking place between 1986 and 1996, the film reenacts the group’s rise to fame and their ultimate demise after the passing of Eazy-E.
Dre explained how he didn’t want Corey Hawkins, who plays the young Dre in the film, to completely copy his mannerisms and life. He said that he only wanted Hawkins to capture his character as he sees fit, while receiving some pointers along the way. Dre also spoke about the moments when he got caught up in his own emotions while filming certain scenes, especially with Jason Mitchell who plays Eazy-E.
“There were a couple of times where I got emotional on set,” said Dre. “When he’s in the hospital and he finds out he has the disease, his [Jason Mitchell’s] acting was so great. Goosebumps man.”
Later on, the Beats creator spoke about how he spent his 50th birthday on a yacht for two weeks and explained how he uses his Beats products around the house. He also revealed some gems about his classic songs “Aint Nothin’ But A G Thang” and “Next Episode.” Watch the interview in full above.
