To Pimp A Butterfly has sent Compton’s own Kendrick Lamar on one hell of a hot streak, commercially, critically, and artistically. Between being lauded as a modern classic a mere month after its release to spending two consecutive weeks at the top of the Billboard charts, Kendrick’s undoubtedly riding high. He premiered his first video post-album release for the single “King Kunta” on a Beats billboard near Times Square in New York City earlier this evening (April 1), but now it’s available on YouTube/Vevo for all to see.
Clad in a varsity jacket and blue LA Dodgers hat, Kendrick is swelling with hometown pride as he dances with his boys and his girls in the streets of Compton; he’s still doing that chicken wing dance that he was rocking with in the video for “i,” and I’m hoping that it catches on the same way the Shmoney dance did.
The video, helmed by “Director X,” is a family affair that you should definitely check out above.
