Earlier today, Billboard reported that a hologram of the late, great Selena Quintanilla will be going on tour in 2018. The hologram is called “Selena The One” and is apparently a “walking, talking, singing, and dancing, digital embodiment” of the Mexican American star.
This is just weird. We’ve seen 2Pac and Nate Dogg holograms already, but Selena’s hologram “will release new songs and videos, will collaborate with current hit artists, and aims to go on tour in 2018.” Wait, what?
How the hell is a hologram of a deceased artist supposed to get in the studio and collaborate with living artists? Do we even want to know how that’s possible?
The company heading up the project is called Acrovert LLC, and they are in the appropriately creepy business of “developing and commercializing the Digitized Human Essence with unparalleled interactivity.” After meeting with AV concepts, a company involved in the 2pac hologram in 2013, Selena’s brother told Associated Press “we all decided that it wasn’t enough for the fans…she looked like a ghost. The image was not well defined.”
This is all too weird for us. We’ll just watch footage of the real Selena instead.
