The summer movie season is Hollywood’s favorite time of the year. Kids with disposable income are out of school and most everyone is looking to beat the heat. But recent ticket hikes have turned movie-going into more of a luxury than it usually is and people tend to save their money for big event movies or more thoughtful projects later in the year. That being said, it looks like Hollywood has stepped their game up this summer in both instances.
Last summer’s movie season didn’t have the monumental critical and commercial start that this one had with Furious 7 and Avengers: Age Of Ultron. The season had its fair share of fun and even great movies (22 Jump Street, Chef, Edge of Tomorrow, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Snowpiercer), but this upcoming crop may have it beat already.
Especially considering the fact that nostalgia properties still have a chokehold on mainstream American cinema (there are nine on this list of 12 movies alone), there’s a lot of variety to look forward to at the movies this summer. Spy movies, post-apocalyptic war zones, more additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, futuristic wonder worlds, romantic mid-life crises, and hip-hop’s original bad boys are all coming our way. Here’s what you need to look out for this season.
