*UPDATE 2: Marina Abramović’s institute has issued an apology to Jay.
*UPDATE: The producer of the “Picasso Baby” video claims Abramović is wrong and cites a receipt that allegedly proves Jay Z actually did make a donation to her institute after all.
Remember in 2013 when Jay Z did that stupid ass “Picasso Baby” shit in a museum and billed it as some sort of performance art piece? To help booster the full-blown hipsterness of the event, he was joined by Marina Abramović, the renowned performance artist who has done crazy shit like let viewers cut her skin and tear clothes off her body.
The whole thing sucked from beginning to end, but in a new interview, Abramovic herself admits she was disappointed by the display. When asked about appearing in the video for “Picasso Baby,” she says, “There was one reason for this I can’t talk about. I am very pissed by this, since he adapted my work only under one condition: that he would help my institute. Which he didn’t.”
She goes on: “The day before, he came to my office and I gave him an entire power point presentation and said: okay, you can help me, because I really need help to build this thing. Then he just completely used me. And that wasn’t fair.”
Abramovic says the whole thing was a “one-way transaction.” Folks ought to get used to this. Corporations and millionaires who say they’re doing something out of good will are not to be trusted. There is always something to be gained personally, whether it’s money or status. That’s the goal, not the altruistic bullshit they feed you. Let this be an example.
