Noname Gypsy and Jean Deaux are two names you should know. The former was featured on Acid Rap back in 2013, and popped up again on Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment’s Surf a couple weeks back with a stunning verse. The latter is the soulful, elegant, down-to-earth vocalist who has worked with rising rappers like Mick Jenkins, Isaiah Rashad, and others.
Yesterday, they quietly dropped a new song called “EYE, ME” produced by JahRas Na’el Shehade David Leo. The song is part of Chicago Sight ‘N Sound, an initiative to regularly highlight upcoming Chicago artists.
One of the best things about both of those Chicago artists is how they never bow to expectations of women in hip-hop. Their perspective is feminine, but the world they create on wax isn’t strictly for women. Noname Gypsy is a poetic MC who constantly breaks traditional rhyme structure to let her raps run amok, while Jean seamlessly transitions between poignantly rapping and singing to your soul. The sparse production helps both ladies sound prominent in the mix as they meditate on their own habits and personalities.
Hear the beautiful song above, and then pray Noname Gypsy is dropping Telefone soon. Lord knows we’ve been waiting.
