Rachel Dolezal, a 37-year-old woman from Spokane, Washington has found herself at the center of the on-going national discussion on race. She is the president of the local NAACP chapter in Spokane, a part-time professor in the Africana Studies program at Eastern Washington University, and has said on at least one application that she is black–as well as white and Native American. However, her parents insist that she has been lying about her race and provided photo support that she has been “passing” as Black for most of her life.
Naturally, the reaction on social media has run the gamut from disdain for lying, to support from other “WrongSkin” people who identify as a race other than the one they were born into (that is really a thing). But what we found the most humorous was the #AskRachel trending topic that served as a quiz for Blackness that we had to share along with the generally hilarious reactions to this phenomenon.
For the record, we think it’s commendable for someone who is not Black to dedicate so much of their life and work to helping right the wrongs endured by that community. But we don’t think that pretending to be Black to do it was necessary or ethical. Now, let’s get to the jokes.
