Slum Village On A Tribe Called Quest & J-Dilla’s Beat Formula

Slum Village SOBs 2015

Today Slum Village members T3 and Young RJ release their latest group effort, YES! The long awaited collection features a who’s who of Slum’s extended family including De La Soul, Black Milk and Phife of A Tribe Called Quest, to name a few.

Slum have been touring with Pete Rock to promote YES! since the top of the year, and during a stop in NYC at SOB’s they took a few moments to talk about working with Phife for the track “Push It Along” and the impact of Q-Tip’s verse on “Hold Tight” from Fantastic Vol. 2 where he infamously “passed the torch” to them.

“That song was like a gift and a curse for Slum Village,” says T3. “We just wanted to do a song with Tip. We had no idea he was going to say what he did. That just put us in a weird space because people thought we destroyed Tribe.”

YES! features a treasure trove of unreleased J-Dilla beats and verses, so they also took time to reflect on a 2010 interview where they address the legend of the J-Dilla “beat formula/equation” that his mother Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey says he passed down to Q-Tip and other producers.

“You can’t argue with the facts,” says Young RJ. “Yes, you want to say there is no formula…there IS a formula.”
