Rihanna debuted the video to her hit single “Bitch Better Have My Money” today and the grisly clip is garnering comparisons to Quentin Tarantino and Chan-Wook Park’s Old Boy. However, the song draws inspiration from another piece of classic cinema, Keenan Ivory Wayans’ classic I’m Gonna Git You Sucka.
The 1988 comedy was a spoof of the blaxploitation films of the 1970’s and featured stars of that era like Jim Brown and Antonio Fargas. In one of the most memorable moments Fargas’s character Fly Guy is competing for Pimp of The Year and recites a poem called “Bitch Betta Have My Money.”
“I was at the premier for ‘I’m Gonna Get You Sucka’ and Eddie Murphy was sitting behind me and said that scene is the funniest thing he’s ever seen,” Mr. Fargas tells WatchLOUD.com. “When you get that kind of co-sign and get guys like Will Smith, Chris Rock and Martin Lawrence [giving] you jobs on their shows because they know who’s shoulders they stand…I feel like it’s the same thing Rihanna has seen…this was an opportunity for her to create something of her own. And I take my hat off to her for giving me that respect.”
Mr. Fargas has yet to meet BadgalRiri in person, but hopes that will change soon.
“I have family from Barbados so we have something in common and I’m sure I’ll have that opportunity to smile at her. I just want to say well done, Rihanna. I know what it takes to do what she’s doing.”
