*MINOR SPOILERS FOR MAN OF STEEL BELOW*
Warner Bros. Studios has been tripping over its feet in an effort to get DC Comics’ stable of superheroes on the big screen. Between the inexorable Green Lantern and the lukewarm reception to 2013’s Man of Steel, they’ve been lagging behind certain other competitors I could name; but today, WB took its boldest step yet with the reveal of the full-length Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer at San Diego Comic Con.
The trailer shows Superman (Henry Cavil) taking responsibility for the destruction in Metropolis and even Gotham City following the events of Steel, and Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) seething in regret and anger before donning the mantle of the Caped Crusader for the first time. We also got our first in-motion looks at Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) and Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) in action, along with some subtle world-building hint drops about The Joker’s place in all of this (which was punctuated by the Suicide Squad trailer that premiered yesterday as well).
The film looks as though it’s going to be based around the idea of Batman & Superman as ideological opposites, which is generic, but it all looks gorgeous, almost like WB and director Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen, Sucker Punch) have something workable here. This might be a crazy roller coaster ride (however emotionally brain-dead) after all. Here are five moments from the trailer that made us believers.
