It’s hard to believe that Juice turned 23 years old earlier this year, and writer/producer/director Ernest Dickerson still has stories about casting the landmark movie.
While speaking with Academy Originals, Dickerson remembers wanting to keep the atmosphere as real as possible when casting the movie; he and his casting director interviewed hundreds of kids from local theater groups and high schools of the performing arts before coming across young Tupac Shakur, right before he blessed the world with 2pacalypse Now in November of 1991. Dickerson originally had him reading for Q, but asked him to stick around and read for Bishop as well. That decision led to one of Tupac’s earliest and best on-screen roles ever.
