Across her storied career, Dr. Maya Angelou made connections with celebrities of all stripes, but she had one of her most profound heart-to-heart moments with someone she didn’t even recognize – Tupac Shakur.
During a sit-down with George Stroumboulopoulos in 2013, Dr. Angelou mentioned being on the set of Poetic Justice in 1993 and encountering Pac in the middle of an argument. “I said to him “May I speak to you?” He was cursing…I said “I understand that, but let me speak to you,” she recalls. “I told him “When was the last time anyone told you how important you are? Did you know our people stood on auction blocks; were sold, bought and sold, so that you could stay alive today?” After putting things in perspective, Angelou said that Pac stopped talking and began to weep in her arms, and she walked him back to his trailer. Later, Janet Jackson came running into Angelou’s trailer and excitedly told her that she’d just talked to Tupac Shakur, to which she replied “Darling, I don’t know six pack, or four pack. I had no idea who he was. That wasn’t in my world.”
Little did she know that she spoke words of wisdom to one of hip-hop’s elite.
