With the news about hip-hop on film swirling after the N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton crossed the $100 million domestically this past weekend, the world is beginning to take the once niche hip-hop biopic seriously. The next MC to express interest in bringing their group’s story to the screen (after Master P, of course) is Raekwon The Chef.
Rae spoke to Hot 97 while promoting his new OB4CL promotional sneaker line, and he briefly touched on the idea of a Wu-Tang Clan biopic: “When we make a Wu movie, bet your ass its gonna be serious,” Rae mentioned. “Because we gotta tell the truth. And I think that’s what I love about the Straight Outta Compton movie is that they told the truth. When we do get to that level and it happens, it has to be the real story. It’s gonna be an interesting one, cause I said – RZA hit the lotto one day. He knew who he had, but he didn’t know what he had. So let’s keep it right there.”
Keeping in the communal spirit, Rae also mentioned that his upcoming documentary wouldn’t be “just a Raekwon or Ghost thing. I mean it’s a whole Hip Hop legacy thing.”
The possibilities are endless, it seems. I’d bank for an animated Wu-Tang movie, or maybe even a mini-series.
