It’s with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to New York legend DJ AJ, who passed away this morning (September 9) from unknown causes.

Most well known as Kurtis Blow’s DJ, AJ moved between New York and Florida as a youth before settling in New York, where he became a staple of the hip-hop community. A.J. claimed that he originally wrote Kurtis Blow’s “If I Ruled The World” for Busy Bee, but the song took on new life once Nas repurposed it for It Was Written back in 1996.

As a writer, producer, and DJ, A.J. was a pioneer in the world of hip-hop who will never be forgotten.
