Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly Medley Lights Up Stephen Colbert’s Stage

Kendrick Lamar has been judicious about the live songs he performs from his latest album To Pimp A Butterfly; he started off solely with the Pharrell-produced banger “Alright” before adding “The Blacker The Berry” and “King Kunta” at this year’s Hot 97 Summer Jam. As the first musical guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night, he added three more songs to his repertoire that blew the roof off the building.

Kendrick, backed by a band that included bassist/producer Thundercat, ran through a medley of songs that included more experimental cuts like “Wesley’s Theory,” “Momma,” and “u,” with “King Kunta” thrown in the middle. Kendrick’s live act has only gotten better with age, he and his band sharing a gift for timing and freeze-frames that suited the ticking time signature of “Momma.” Watch the amazing performance above. Kendrick had better start touring soon.
