The upcoming biopic based on the life of singer and civil rights activist Nina Simone has seen quite a bit of controversy since casting actress Zoe Saldana as Simone, who had her skin darkened to play the role. We’re all going to see how this turns out for ourselves because the film has been picked up for distribution.
RLJ Entertainment has officially picked up the film for release this December. The film, also starring David Oyelowo, chronicles Simone’s life as she leaves the United States for France after racial tensions became too much to bear in the 1960s, before she meets Clifton Henderson (Oyelowo), who helps her regain her faith in herself, her music, and her country. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier last year amid lawsuits and accusations of blackface. Regardless of the poor makeup decision (darkening the skin of the fair-toned Saldana), we’ll all see if the film is worthy of this controversy at the end of the year.
