Being Black in America has always come with its own set of handicaps. Between the still-building cultural biases created in the wake of the September 11 attacks and the disturbing spike in police brutality cases over the course of the last year, tensions are only rising.
Yesterday (September 15), young Ahmed Mohamed, who fixes and builds his own electronics, brought a homemade clock to his school in Irving, Texas, which was swiftly confused for a bomb; which led to him being *arrested* and hauled off to juvenile detention. Even given his situation, Ahmed took to Twitter to thank everyone for the support he’s received in this horrendous mixup:
Naturally, Twitter has something to say about poor Ahmed’s situation. #IStandWithAhmed has been circulating this morning as a way to reverently show solidarity, but for the comedians of Twitter, #TexasSchoolsBeLike is here to call out the reactionary nature of teachers and schools not just in Texas, but all over the country.
