The cinematic success of Straight Outta Compton ($180 million+ domestic gross over the course of the summer) proved that hip-hop could even take over the movies, and Universal isn’t ready to hop off of this new gravy train just yet.
We’ve heard news, rumors, and speculation about biopics for every group from Tha Dogg Pound and Outkast to The Wu-Tang Clan, but Universal is putting their foot down by getting the ball rolling on the origins of Def Jam Recordings; which would be based on the Russell Simmons & Nelson George-authored book Life and Def: Sex, Drugs, Money + God from 2002. The movie would focus around Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin, and Deadline reports that Universal has their eyes on Michael B. Jordan and Jonah Hill for the respective roles. Hill with the Rick Rubin hair would be a sight to see, but this is all in the planning stages. Would Universal have another hit not heir hands if they went through with this?
