Jay Dot Rain’s Dixie Renaissance Is The Best Thing Tuscaloosa Has Given Us In A Long Time

The smartest thing an artist can do in 2015 is hone their sound, distill it until it becomes instantly recognizable, and continue down the path of consistency. Tucscaloosa, Alabama’s Jay Dot Rain clearly gets this, as his August mixtape The Dixie Renaissance is an exercise in execution. The whole thing sounds like a dream, weaving ’90s rap samples and ’63 Impalas throughout the 12-track tape.

It’s hard to fuck up beats from production extraordinaries like DJ Burn One and Block Beataz, but Rain never sounds out of his element. He’s been dropping videos for songs from the project with classic movie footage, and yesterday he dropped “Serenity,” packaged with scenes from Ninja Assassin. If you were watching the Tidal concert last night at Barclays, you might have noticed Rain up on that stage with A$AP Ferg. Judging by his music, this kid’s got a big future ahead of him.
