You knew it was coming. Ever since Jerry Heller announced he’d be watching the Straight Outta Compton movie with his lawyer, a lawsuit seemed inevitable, as Heller is never portrayed well in the history of N.W.A. Now it’s come to fruition.
TMZ reports that Heller is suing Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, and the producers of Straight Outta Compton for defamation. The former head of Ruthless Records doesn’t like Paul Giamatti’s portrayal of him as a “bad guy,” says he never kept a $75,000 from Ice Cube, and refutes the claim that he “fraudulently induced” Dre and Cube to sign bad contracts. He also denies those pricey “lobster brunches” and getting fired by Eazy-E as his manager.
In addition, Heller says the movie’s producers used his likeness and sourced his novel, “Ruthless: A Memoir,” without his permission. For all that, he wants at least $110 million, including $35 million in compensatory damages and $75 million in punitive damages.
What’ll be interesting to see, if this goes to court, is whether any documents will surface. Though we’ve repeatedly heard both Dre and Ice Cube’s versions of the story, as well as Heller’s, we’ve never seen any official documents about the financial situation leak.
