*UPDATE* Mass Appeal has released a short “paw-cumentary” about the making of Meow The Jewels. Killer Mike and El-P give a shout out to marijuana for bringing this project to life. Check it out.
Now that Meow The Jewels is officially out and driving cats around the world insane, it’s time to consider the fact that the vast majority of the profits generated are going straight to charity – but which ones? El-P and Killer Mike (“Jamie and Mike”) shot an email to Kickstarter donors earlier this morning (October 22) explaining exactly where the $65, 783 raised is going.
As they stated once the campaign officially got off the ground, both Mike and El donated $20,000 to the Eric Garner and Michael Brown Jr. Foundations, respectively, while $19,749 went toward Kickstarter rewards, record mastering, bogus pledges, etc. Even profits from the limited edition vinyl release are going to charity. And if you notice that $6,033 left over at the bottom, all of that (minus whatever extra fees come from Kickstarter/Amazon) will be donated to the National Lawyers Guild’s Mass Defense Committee, described as “a network of lawyers, legal workers, and law students providing legal support for political activists, protesters and movements for social change.”
Regardless of what you may think of Meow The Jewels, the fact that Mike and El are as good as their word is nothing short of admirable and is about as true to hip-hop as you can possibly be.
