*UPDATE 2* Turns out Straight Outta Compton is *not* the highest grossing film by a Black filmmaker of all time. That distinction actually belongs to director Peter Ramsey for 2012’s Rise of the Guardians aka “Avengers for kids.” The film, about Santa Claus, The Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny, The Sandman, and Jack Frost fighting against the forces of Pitch Black, grossed $306.9 million worldwide, as opposed to Compton‘s $199 million. Guardians was Ramsey’s first directorial effort after years as a storyboard artist, which is even more impressive. Don’t believe us? Check out Box Office Mojo‘s numbers and see for yourself.
And Ramsey’s achievement isn’t even considering that films like Antoine Fuqua’s King Arthur ($203 million) from 2004, Clark Johnson’s 2003 reboot of S.W.A.T. ($207 million), and John Singleton’s 2 Fast 2 Furious ($236 million) from 2003 have all grossed more than Compton and are all directed by PoC. The list goes on, so make sure to do your Googles, guys.
*UPDATE* Straight Outta Compton is officially the highest grossing film from an African-American director of all time, having brought in just under $200 million for Universal Pictures and director F. Gary Gray. According to Box Office Mojo, the film has pulled in $161.1 million from the U.S. and $38.8 million from international markets since its first release this August, with Russia and Spain still to open next week (November 12 and 13, respectively). You can bet your ass that every studio with half a brain will be jumping on the hip-hop bandwagon after this one. Give us either Boot Camp Clik or D12 next!
