During a stop into The Dan LeBatard Show, OutKast’s Big Boi let it slip that the Atlanta group passed up on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity over a decade ago.
When asked about the most memorable sporting event he ever played, Big Boi revealed that he and André 3000 were asked to play the Super Bowl Halftime Show (and implied it was the same year as Janet Jackson’s infamous “wardrobe malfunction”), but that they turned it down because of André’s insistence that they play full songs. They were asked to play shortened versions of “Hey Ya!” and “The Way You Move,” but the Super Bowl committee wouldn’t give them enough time: “[Andre] didn’t want to cut the songs, he wanted to do the full songs. He said, ‘Nah, can’t do it.'”
Even though Big tried to change André’s mind (allegedly “a lot”), they laugh about it now. Even though the prospect of what might’ve been looms large over this, I can’t imagine all the dough they raked in from Southernplayalisticadillacmusik’s 20th anniversary last year making them feel bad for missing the opportunity.
