Imagine being taught about the history of hip-hop culture in college by one of rap’s leading producers. 9th Wonder (real name Patrick Douthit) has been a lecturer and college professor for a minute, and this coming spring, he and fellow professor Mark Anthony Neal will be teaching the six iteration of The History of Hip-Hop at Duke University.
The duo released a promo video detailing the early history of the genre and various experiences each have had in the now 42-year-old genre of music. “Why is it when I go to other countries and I’m DJing…and a French kid who doesn’t speak English knows all the words to Wu-Tang Clan’s “C.R.E.A.M.?,” 9th asks. “I want to understand that connection…and make sure the story is told the right way.”
9th has been talking about making the transition to full-time professor for a while, and if this is what he has in mind, then we can’t complain too much. Check out the promo above.
