Top Dawg Entertainment Has More Music Coming In 2016

Given the fact that Top Dawg Entertainment had an incredible 2015 with Kendrick Lamar’s landmark To Pimp A Butterfly and Jay Rock’s no frills 90059, it would be safe to assume the label’s taking it easy this year. Not if label president Dave Free has anything to say about it.

During an interview with MTV, Free took the time to talk about all the new music coming from the label. “A lot of artists didn’t come out in 2015,” he elaborated. “By the time we come back around on this next go? Oh my goodness. It’s gonna crazy. We’re gonna have everybody hittin’.”

He specifically mentions that ScHoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, SZA, and Isaiah Rashad all have full-length projects dropping over the course of the next 12 months and can barely contain his excitement about the direction TDE’s camp is heading in. “Within our camp, we challenge each other. We push each other to get to the next level. Nobody’s gonna sit there and hold their tongue and let nobody walk out the house with dirt on their face. We’re gonna tell you, ‘You got a bugger on your nose. You know that, right?’ Ain’t nobody gonna half-step. Everybody’s gonna bring that sh-t. That’s the tight part…We’re pushing each other.”

Free also poked the proverbial fan bear by talking a bit about Kendrick and J. Cole’s hotly anticipated collaborative group project, asking fans to adjust their expectations: “A joint album does sound great, but people need to understand, these are two geniuses,” he said. “These are two creative guys. It takes a long time for one of them to get in a space to create a song, so to get two of them in a space to do that, it takes a lot of time and energy. It all has to be a singular project, but it just can’t happen overnight.”
