UPDATE: Blowfly’s final album 77 Rusty Trombones is up for streaming on Soundcloud. Listen to it below.
As far as precursors to hip-hop go, Curtis “Blowfly” Reid is up there with Parliament Funkadelic in terms of his influence on the genre. His nearly 50-year career is coming to a somewhat bittersweet end as he’s been diagnosed with terminal liver cancer and is currently in hospice care in Florida.
Not one to go down without a fight, Blowfly announced via his Facebook page that he’ll be releasing his 27th and final album 77 Rusty Trombones sometime next month. As a true pioneer and arguably one of the first rappers ever, we can’t think of a better sendoff than this. Fans are encouraged to send letters and well wishes to the Florida Medical Center at the address marked below.
