Oscars Remain So White With 2016 Nominations

straight outta compton

April Reign was onto something tragically accurate when she coined the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite after the announcement of last year’s Academy Award nominations, and unfortunately enough, the trend still holds true as 2016’s nominees came in this morning (January 14).

Straight Outta Compton and What Happened, Miss Simone? both received nominations, but the acting, directing, and even Best Picture categories have been completely whitewashed for the second year in a row. No love for crowd favorites like Creed (unless you count Sylvester Stallone’s nod for Best Supporting Actor) or Compton, and The Academy only filled eight of the possible 10 slots for Best Picture.

Chris Rock may be hosting the ceremony this year, but will it really be enough to make up for PoC of all stripes being overlooked by The Academy yet again? What does it say about the awards that director Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu and singer The Weeknd is the only person of color nominated for an Academy Award in 2016?

Iñárritu’s The Revenant led the pack this year with a whopping 12 nominations. Peep the list of nominees while we continue to shake our heads:
