Idris Elba, Queen Latifah & More Welcome All To “Diverse TV” With SAG Award Wins

3000

Amid the #OscarsSoWhite controversy at the upcoming Academy Awards, we all must be sick to death of hearing about awards shows. But the Screen Actors Guild Awards were a genuine breath of fresh air last night that saw a handful of diverse TV wins.

Queen Latifah, Uzo Aduba, and Viola Davis all won for their roles in HBO’s Bessie, Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black, and ABC’s How To Get Away With Murder respectively, and Idris Elba walked away with not one but *two* awards for the Netflix film Beasts Of No Nation and The BBC’s revival of Luther. Elba even scored a funny dig at The Academy. The Academy Awards’ recent membership rules change was a nice step in the right direction, but SAG managed to put some feet in the actual door this time around. Quality performances from people of all skin colors and ethnicities are out there, and soon all our award shows will reflect that. In Idris’s words, “Welcome to diverse TV.”

Check out the acceptance speeches, social media flexing, and the rest of the nominees/winners below.
