What do you get when MC Open Mike Eagle and producer Paul White cross paths in The UK? A new album called Hella Personal Film Festival, apparently. The Chicago MC and London-based producer revealed their new 14-track album, out March 25 via the good people at Mello Music Group earlier today (February 4), along with the first single “Check To Check.”
The duo recorded the album at Office/Space Studios in London and revealed via Bandcamp that it’s an incredibly personal record for the both of them: “For Open Mike the songs are about being vulnerable, about brown people with rich internal lives, about people dealing with pain. Paul’s music has an emotional core and It was exciting for him to explore these nuanced regions of human emotion and social interaction. ”
The dryly funny Mike released two projects through Mello last year; the A Special Episode Of… EP and Time & Materials as one half of the duo Cavanaugh with rapper Serengeti Dave. Paul White has provided production for Danny Brown, Homeboy Sandman, Mos Def, and others in the past.
The album has only two guest features from Aesop Rock and Hemlock Ernst, rapping alter ego of Future Islands’ Sam Herring. Listen to “Check To Check” above and pre-order the album.
