Most hip-hop fans of a certain age are familiar with Black Star, the grouping of Brooklyn MCs Mos Def and Talib Kweli that dropped a classic project in 1998 before branching out in their own directions shortly after. The birth of the group can be traced back to legendary record company Fat Beats’ LA store in 1996, where a one-year anniversary show brought the two MCs together.
DJ Eclipse just uploaded video of that performance to YouTube earlier today (February 25), and their chemistry is evident right from the jump. The 13-minute set sees Mos, still running with Rawkus Records, and Talib, still hot off his collaborations with Mood, move the crowd in ways only they can. Both artists have come a long way since the pre-Black Star days, but it’s no less humbling to see where it all began.
