UPDATE: The third and final single from He Has Risen is here. Listen to “100k” here:
Harlem MC Smoke DZA is an in-demand name for producers. He and Pete Rock should be releasing a new project before too long, but before that, DZA’s linked up with Harry Fraud for a joint project called He Has Risen, dropping on March 4.
The duo released a decked-out video for the second single “Heard Dat” earlier today via Noisey. The horn loop playing over those drums isn’t a sample, either: “We worked with live players on ‘Heard Dat,’ so the song is like a hybrid of new age mixed with contemporary sonics, and I think the video reflects that also,” DZA said in a press release. “For me and Harry (Fraud), it doesn’t matter if it’s the music we make, the ‘Lo we rock or the loud we smoke. We know we’re fly, we know you’re watching, just pay homage.”
Fraud notes that this is the first time they’ve worked together on a whole project since 2012: “The last three years we developed our styles out of being pigeonholed. Smoke has his usual subject matter, but he also ventures into uncharted territory on He Has Risen. Overall I think we came with something that fits in the current landscape, without comprising what we’re known for.”
He Has Risen drops March 4. Check out the video for “Heard Dat” above.
