As far as hip-hop pioneers go, Q-Tip is still one of the culture’s most valued voices. His presence as an MC, producer, DJ, occasional actor, and radio host over the last 30+ years makes the Kennedy Center’s choice to make him its Artistic Director of Hip-Hop Culture the best one.
The Kennedy Center’s inaugural Hip-Hop Culture series starts this July and will feature events like a youth poetry slam, a b-boy competition, and many more through June 2017. “With hip-hop constantly changing and evolving, it is easy to forget the history and legacy that precede it,” Tip said in a statement. “I want to begin at the beginning of the Culture to help people see its roots, better understand its present, and responsibly create its future.”
